Everything you need to know about Brighton Beach, Melbourne

Brighton Beach isn’t just a postcard-perfect spot—it’s a Melbourne icon with vibrant beach boxes, golden sand, and stunning coastal views. It makes me feel like I’ve stepped into a scene from a classic Aussie travel brochure whenever I walk along the shoreline!

The famous Brighton Bathing Boxes bring a splash of color to the coast, much like the unforgettable beach moments in Baywatch—minus the slow-motion running.

Cafés and restaurants nearby also serve everything from fresh seafood to artisan coffee, making it easy to fuel up between swims.

Plus, its scenic cycling paths, paddleboarding, and sunset strolls add to the charm, ensuring there’s something for everyone!

Brighton Beach is located about 11 km southeast of Melbourne’s CBD. It sits along Port Phillip Bay, offering stunning coastal views and a relaxed seaside atmosphere.

The beach is famous for its colorful bathing boxes, soft sandy shore, and clear waters, making it a popular spot for both locals and visitors.

How to get to Brighton Beach

By train: Take the Sandringham Line from Flinders Street Station. After that, get off at Brighton Beach Station, which is about a 20-minute ride. From the station, it’s just a short walk to the beach.

By car: Drive down Nepean Highway or Beach Road toward Brighton. There’s paid and free parking available near the beach, but it fills up quickly on sunny days.

By bike: Ride along the Bay Trail, a scenic coastal cycling path that runs from Melbourne’s CBD to Brighton and beyond. It’s a beautiful and relaxing way to reach the beach while enjoying ocean views.

What to do and see in Brighton Beach

Capture the Iconic Brighton Bathing Boxes

Brighton Beach’s 82 colorful bathing boxes are more than just eye-catching—they’re a piece of Melbourne’s coastal history.

These heritage-listed structures have stood along the shoreline for over a century, maintaining their original Victorian-era charm.

Each box is uniquely designed, featuring bold colors, intricate patterns, and creative artwork. Owners take pride in decorating them, making every visit a chance to see something different.

It’s so beautiful that I still find myself gathering with the tourists and locals who flock to the boxes for the ultimate Instagram-worthy shot.

Walk or cycle the scenic Bay Trail

The Bay Trail at Brighton Beach is one of my favorite scenic coastal walks. This picturesque path stretches along the foreshore, providing breathtaking views of Port Phillip Bay and the city skyline.

Covering over 17 kilometers, the trail connects Brighton Beach with other iconic bayside spots. Smooth pathways, lush greenery, and direct beach access make it a fantastic option for walkers, cyclists, and joggers–like me!

Locals and visitors alike also enjoy the fresh sea breeze while taking in the peaceful surroundings. The combination of ocean views and well-maintained tracks creates the perfect setting for a leisurely stroll or an active workout.

Plus, the trail is accessible and well-developed, which makes it suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

Relax on the soft sandy beach

Soft sand and gentle waves create an inviting atmosphere for beach lovers of all ages. Families, solo travelers, and groups of friends can all find a comfortable spot to unwind without feeling crowded.

What I usually do is take a dip in the water for a refreshing escape on warm days, while the soft sand makes an ideal setting for sunbathing after dipping or a casual game of beach cricket. The beach’s well-maintained surroundings add to its allure for relaxation.

While relaxing, you might also spot seagulls soaring overhead, while the sound of waves completes the picture-perfect scene.

See the whole bay by trying stand-up paddleboarding

The beach is a perfect place to try stand-up paddleboarding because of its gentle, calm waters. It’s an ideal spot for first-timers looking to get the hang of paddling without the pressure of heavy surf.

The beach’s gentle slope into the water ensures a smooth entry and exit for the boards, making it easier for all skill levels to enjoy the activity.

When I tried stand-up paddleboarding, I found it relaxing and invigorating.

As I glided peacefully along the bay, I was able to take in the sweeping views of the city’s skyline and enjoy the sight of the colorful Brighton Bathing Boxes that line the shore. I recommend doing the same for the best experience!
