Everything you need to know about Parliament House, Melbourne
Parliament House is an iconic structure that sits at the corner of Spring and Bourke streets.
It’s the perfect blend of classical and modern design, and even just walking by will leave you in awe of its beauty. But of course, it would be a shame not to step inside.
I visited recently—not my first time, but it had been a while. One of the highlights was the free guided tour—I love joining these things—where the guide shared interesting tidbits about the construction of the building and its political significance.
The story that stuck with me the most was about the granddaughter of the building’s first housekeeper and her love for the place.
I also had the chance to see the historic chambers, appreciate the fine arts, and enjoy the atmosphere.
Whether you want to visit for an educational day or just to admire the impressive structure, here’s the perfect guide that will help you make the most of your time there.

Ask anyone who’s tried it, and they’ll tell you that Parliament House’s free 45-minute guided tour is a must-try. It gives visitors the chance to explore the building’s stunning architecture while gaining a deeper understanding of how the state’s government operates.
The tour highlights key moments in the state’s history, showing how its governance has evolved over time. I know, I know, it might sound like a snoozefest for some, but seeing it up close is different.

I have to admit, the grandeur of the Legislative Chambers took my breath away when I saw it for the first time. Not only was it breathtaking to look at, especially the intricate ceiling work, but I also realized that it was a piece of history, dating back to the 19th century.
Here’s a tip: Don’t forget to take a moment to admire the finer details. It will make your visit even more special.
The artistry in the design, from gold embellishments to carved timber furnishings, showcases the dedication that went into creating a space worthy of Victoria’s political heart.

When I watched a parliamentary debate at Melbourne’s Parliament House, I was both fascinated and intrigued. The public galleries offer a clear view of the action, so it was easy to follow the lively exchanges as politicians present arguments and challenge ideas.
Knowing what’s on the agenda made the experience even more engaging, so I recommend you get yourself up-to-date with the latest issues. You can check the day’s topics either online or at the information desk, which helps provide context and a deeper understanding of the debates.

You can’t say you’ve been to Parliament House without stopping by the Queen’s Hall. Well, technically, you can, but what’s the point?
Its opulent design, which can be traced back to the 19th century, is the undeniable highlight. Not only that, the ornate columns and detailed ceiling work can be admired as you take a step back and enjoy the finer details
However, the statue of Queen Victoria remains the star of the show. The detailed craftsmanship left me in awe during my recent visit.

Bookworms, rejoice—here’s something I’m sure you’d all love. Parliament House also has a Parliament Library, where members of Parliament access research materials, along with invaluable legislative records.
And then there’s the extensive collection of historical documents and rare books lining the shelves.
Plus, you won’t be able to take your eyes off the stunning chandelier for a hot minute. It was the first thing I saw when I entered, as it’s truly attention grabbing, considering it was made with a lot of small glass pieces.
Before I could even ask, the tour guide informed us that the glass pieces are 2,000 Belgian crystals that weigh 440 kilograms!
