What to do in Carlton Gardens

1. Visit cultural landmarks

One of the best things about Carlton Gardens is that it’s more than just “a park” — it’s home to some of Melbourne’s iconic cultural spots.

Right in the middle of the gardens is the UNESCO World Heritage site, the Royal Exhibition Building. To this day, this building still hosts various exhibitions and fairs.

Even if you don’t go inside, its grand dome and overall architecture are worth admiring at any spot in the gardens.

And that’s not all, because the Melbourne Museum is just next door. It’s filled with interactive exhibits, historic displays, and even a living rainforest inside.

It’s perfect for a family outing and also a great option if ever you get caught in bad weather at the gardens.

2. Watch a movie at IMAX

Being the home to the world’s largest screen, IMAX Melbourne is where you should plan your movie nights. They often screen documentaries and Hollywood classics that take on a new life because of the latest laser projection and sound technology.

It easily fits your schedule in the gardens—you could spend time exploring the museum and the park, then settle for a film to round things off.

Tickets are pricier than a regular cinema, but given the experience and the facilities, many people find it’s worth it. After all, it’s not every day you get to watch a movie that big.

3. Take a walk or run

If you prefer the simplest pleasures in Carlton Gardens, just walking through it is enough to keep you entertained. You’ll pass along ornamental lakes with ducks, fountains, and patches of seasonal flowers.

The gardens are laid out with tree-lined paths, providing shade and comfort while taking a stroll.

Many joggers also find it a great way to fit in a workout, especially on early mornings when it’s chillier and quieter.

4. Take your kids to the playground

Carlton Gardens isn’t just a place for grown-ups to enjoy. Just around the northern section of the park, there’s a large playground for kids to hang out at. You’ll find slides, climbing frames, and even a little maze-like layout.

The area is well-kept, and the facilities are designed to suit not just different age groups but varying abilities as well. Inclusive structures and ramps are added so children with mobility needs also get to play.

For the parents, the open lawns surrounding the playground can be used as a space to supervise the kids by laying down a blanket or using the benches spread around. You can turn a simple playground visit into a full day out by having a picnic there, too.

Operating hours: Monday to Sunday 10:00 am – 5:00 pm

For history lovers or those curious about Melbourne’s early days, the Old Melbourne Gaol is one of the most immersive places to learn, which is different from a traditional museum.

This museum will give you the chance to imagine what life might have been like while being imprisoned here.

There are themed tours that tell the story of famous inmates like the notorious Ned Kelly as well as ghost tours that lean more into the darker history of the building.

It’s not your typical museum visit, so some families wonder if it’s suitable for kids. While older children and teens often find the stories fascinating, the atmosphere can be a little intense for younger ones.

2. Parliament of Victoria

If the Parliament is sitting, visitors can watch the proceedings from the public galleries.

If you’re more interested in its architecture, guided tours on Fridays are dedicated to diving deeper into the building’s design and quirks of its “unfinished” look.
