Altona has always been my go-to spot when I need a break from the city rush and want to be with my family.
The beach here is perfect for a lazy afternoon—and the laid-back vibe makes it feel like an oasis. I know I’m not the only one, but with the soft sea breeze and the right soundtrack, I always feel like the star of a Tame Impala music video.
Beyond the beach, there’s plenty to explore. The parks and wetlands are great for a peaceful walk, and Pier Street has some fantastic cafes serving up fresh seafood and great coffee.
Whatever way you want to relax, Altona has a little bit of everything that can help you unwind, from nature to great food—all without the tourist crowds. It’s one of those places that feels like a local secret, but once you visit, you’ll want to keep coming back.

Altona is a suburb located about 13 km southwest of the Central Business District. It sits within the City of Hobsons Bay and is known for its coastal charm.

For adventure seekers like myself, you’re really going to love this one—Altona Beach provides excellent conditions for your next adrenaline-inducing activity. I recommend going kite surfing or paddle boarding—or both because why not?
You can expect consistent winds and open spaces ideal for these water sports. What’s more, there are local operators on-site who offer equipment rentals and lessons for beginners looking to try something new.
And don’t think I’ve forgotten about you, cycling enthusiasts. You can also enjoy a leisurely ride along the charming Esplanade.
